A combination machine embroiders properly: you hoop the fabric, choose a design, and the machine moves the hoop under the needle to stitch it. That is genuinely different from the decorative stitches on an ordinary machine, and it is why people pay for it.
The number that governs everything is the embroidery field: 4 x 4 inches on both machines here, and on almost every combination machine at this price.
What fits in four inches
Monograms and names. A left-chest logo on a shirt. Patches and badges. Care labels inside handmade clothes. A motif on a quilt block. A small design on a tote bag pocket.
What does not fit: a design across the back of a jacket, a large hooped wall piece, an all-over pattern. Splitting a design across several hoopings is technically possible and considerably more fiddly than it sounds - alignment is unforgiving.
The ongoing cost
Embroidery consumes materials in a way that sewing does not. Every design needs stabilizer behind it - cut-away for knits, tear-away for stable wovens, wash-away for lace effects - and each is used up. Embroidery thread comes in more colors than any starter pack contains. Designs beyond the built-in library are bought individually.
Budget past the machine. This is the most common surprise for new embroidery owners and the reason some abandon it.
