Affordable is not the same as cheap. There is a level below which sewing machines stop being sewing machines and become frustration devices with a needle - and there is a level just above it where machines are genuinely good and genuinely inexpensive. This page is about the second one.

What to demand at any price
Adjustable stitch length. The clearest dividing line between a real machine and a toy. Without it you cannot baste, topstitch or lengthen the stitch for heavy fabric.
A named model from an established manufacturer. Brother, Singer, Janome. Not because the badge is magic, but because you can find a manual, spare bobbins, the right needle and a video of the threading path.
Mains power, not batteries. A battery compartment is the single most reliable indicator that a machine will not sew properly.
What you give up at the low end
The Brother XM2701 is the machine that leads this list because it has the first three, which is unusual at its price.
When it is worth spending more
Three situations justify stretching to the CS7000X tier.
You already know you will sew weekly. Buying cheap first means buying twice.
You want to quilt. The wide table is not something you can add to a cheaper Brother later.
You are nervous. The speed slider is worth real money to someone who is frightened of the pedal, and no affordable machine has one.
