Why this exists

Buying a first sewing machine is strangely hard. The boxes compete on stitch counts nobody uses, the big review sites test machines the way a lab would rather than the way a nervous beginner would, and the forums assume you already know what a presser foot is. StitchStarter sits in the gap: plain-English guides written for the person who has never threaded a bobbin.

How we choose

We do not run a test lab, and we will never claim to. Our picks come from comparing what beginners actually struggle with — threading, tension, buttonholes, thick seams — against each machine's real features, its long-run reliability reputation in owner feedback, and how easy it is to find help for that exact model. Every recommendation names who should skip it. If we would not hand a machine to a friend starting out, it is not here.
