Portability matters more than most buyers expect, because the machine that stays in the cupboard never gets used. If you have no permanent sewing table - which describes most first-time buyers - then being able to lift the machine with one hand is a feature that gets used every single session.
What lightness costs
Weight is what keeps a sewing machine still. A light machine vibrates more, walks across the table on thick seams, and has less mass behind the needle when it meets resistance. That is the direct trade: every pound you save carrying it is a pound not helping you sew denim.

What to look for in a portable machine
A real carry handle, molded into the body rather than a strap. All three machines here have one.
A free arm. The removable flat section around the needle turns into a narrow arm for sleeves and cuffs - and doubles as accessory storage, which matters when the machine lives in a cupboard between uses.
A hard cover or a dust cover. Machines that live on a shelf collect dust in the bobbin race, and dust in the bobbin race is the leading cause of mysterious tension problems.

Are mini sewing machines any good?
