Scores are our editorial judgment on six axes, explained on the methodology page. We do not run a test lab and never claim to.

The best Brother sewing machine for a beginner is the Brother CS7000X. It has the two things the cheaper Brother machines do not - a speed-control slider that lets you sew slowly while your hands learn, and a wide table in the box - and it keeps the automatic needle threader and drop-in bobbin that make the whole range easy to start on. If that is more machine than you want to commit to, the Brother XM2701 is the honest cheap answer, and the GX37 is the same machine under a different number.

Brother is the brand most beginners end up buying, and the reason is not mysterious. The automatic threader and the visible drop-in bobbin appear on models at the very bottom of the range, where Singer and Janome both charge extra for them. Those two features remove the two jobs that make a first evening miserable. Everything else on a Brother spec sheet is secondary.

Why these five and not the other forty

Brother sells an enormous domestic range, and most of the model numbers are retailer variants of each other - a different accessory bundle, a different faceplate, a stitch count that reads better on a shelf tag. A beginner only needs to care about four questions, and the five machines above are the only answers worth paying for.

Does it have a speed limiter? Only the CS7000X, of these. It is the single most useful beginner feature Brother makes and it is strangely rare.

Does it come with a wide table? The CS7000X and the XR9550. A wide table is what makes a quilt or a curtain manageable rather than a wrestling match, and buying one separately later costs more than the gap between models.

Does it embroider? Only the SE700 - and the decorative stitches on the others are not embroidery, whatever the box count suggests. Our sewing versus embroidery guide is the page to read before you spend money on this assumption.

How light is it? The XM2701 and GX37 are genuinely easy to carry to a class or lift out of a cupboard. The CS7000X is not heavy either, but it is a machine you leave out.

A sewing machine needle and presser foot stitching light fabric
Every Brother on this list threads itself and takes a drop-in bobbin. That is the whole reason the brand suits beginners.

SE700103 plus 135 designsNoNo4 x 4 inch field

Read that table from the third column, not the second. Stitch count is the number Brother prints largest and the one that changes your sewing least - the XR9550 has 110 stitches and most owners settle on five of them inside a month. The speed limiter column is the one that changes how your first fortnight goes.

The XM2701 and the GX37 are the same machine

This is worth saying plainly because the two models sit next to each other on every retailer page and the price gap moves weekly. The GX37 has ten more built-in stitches than the XM2701. They are decorative, you will use roughly six stitches on either machine, and everything that matters - the threader, the drop-in bobbin, the one-step buttonhole, the six presser feet, the weight - is identical. Buy whichever one is cheaper on the day you look. Our head-to-head on those two goes through it properly.

Who should skip Brother entirely

If you want dials, not menus. The CS7000X and XR9550 select stitches through a small screen. Some people find that fine and some find it maddening, and if you are the second kind you will be happier with a Janome 2212 where every setting is a physical knob you can see at once.

If you will sew heavy fabric weekly. Covered above. A metal interior frame is a real thing and Brother’s beginner range does not have one.

If you want a machine to hand down. Computerized machines have boards and screens, and those are the parts that fail in fifteen years. A mechanical machine has almost nothing in it that can go wrong - our guide to how long machines last sets out the trade-off honestly.

The quiet advantage nobody lists

There are more tutorials, threading videos and forum answers for the CS7000X and the XM2701 than for almost any other beginner machine on sale. When your bobbin thread bunches at nine in the evening, the difference between a model with four hundred videos and a model with four is the difference between a fifteen-minute problem and a ruined week. It does not appear on a spec sheet and it is one of the better reasons to buy either machine.

The picks in full

01 - Best Brother overall

Brother CS7000X

Does the fiddly parts for you so you can spend your energy learning to sew.

Close-up of hands threading a needle on a home sewing machine
  • 70 built-in stitches, 7 one-step buttonholes
  • Automatic needle threader, drop-in top bobbin
  • Speed-control slider
  • Wide table and 10 presser feet included
Get it if
You want threading, buttonholes and stitch settings handled by the machine, and you might try quilting later - the wide table is already in the box.
Skip it if
You want physical dials instead of a menu, or you will be sewing canvas, upholstery or leather regularly.

The trade-off

Light and mostly plastic. That makes it easy to carry and quiet on cottons and mid-weights; it is not built for heavy layers every day.

02 - Best cheap Brother

Brother XM2701

The find-out-if-I-actually-like-this machine.

A compact sewing machine set up on a small desk
  • 27 stitches, one-step buttonhole
  • Automatic needle threader, drop-in bobbin
  • 6 presser feet included
  • Light enough to carry to a class
Get it if
You are not sure sewing will stick and you want a real, capable machine without spending what a better one costs.
Skip it if
You already know you will sew every week, or you want speed control and a quilting table.

The trade-off

Lightweight and basic. It does everything a beginner needs - buttonholes, zippers, hems - but you will outgrow it sooner than the CS7000X.

03 - Buy whichever is cheaper

Brother GX37

The XM2701's slightly better-equipped sibling, for about the same job.

A beginner sewing machine with a length of fabric under the foot
  • 37 built-in stitches, one-step buttonhole
  • Automatic needle threader, drop-in bobbin
  • 6 presser feet included
  • Free arm and a lightweight body
Get it if
You are shopping at the bottom of the sensible range and the GX37 happens to be the one in stock or discounted.
Skip it if
You want a speed limiter, a wide table, or a machine that will still suit you in three years.

The trade-off

The extra stitches over the XM2701 are mostly decorative and you will use about six of them. Treat the two machines as interchangeable and buy whichever is cheaper on the day.

04 - Best if you want the display

Brother XR9550

More stitches and a bigger screen than the CS7000X, for the same job.

The control panel and display of a computerized sewing machine
  • 110 built-in stitches, 8 one-step buttonhole styles
  • LCD display and stitch selection
  • Wide table included
  • Automatic threader, drop-in bobbin
Get it if
You want the CS7000X's convenience with a larger display and more decorative stitches.
Skip it if
You would rather put the difference toward fabric - you will use a fraction of the stitch library.

The trade-off

The extra stitches are decorative. The real difference from the CS7000X is the display, and the CS7000X's speed slider is arguably worth more to a beginner.

05 - Best if you want embroidery

Brother SE700

A sewing machine and a 4x4 embroidery machine in one box.

An embroidery machine stitching a design into hooped fabric
  • 103 sewing stitches plus 135 built-in embroidery designs
  • 4 x 4 inch embroidery field
  • Color touchscreen, wireless design transfer
  • Automatic threader, drop-in bobbin
Get it if
You want to personalize things - names, monograms, patches, small designs - as well as sew.
Skip it if
You mainly want to make clothes or quilts. The same money buys a better dedicated sewing machine.

The trade-off

The 4 x 4 inch embroidery field is small, and embroidery has ongoing costs - stabilizer, thread, designs. Great at what it does; not a shortcut to a better sewing machine.

Questions beginners actually ask

What is the best Brother sewing machine for a beginner?

The Brother CS7000X. It is the only machine in Brother's beginner range with a speed-control slider, it comes with a wide table for quilts and curtains, and it keeps the automatic needle threader and drop-in bobbin that make the brand easy to start on. The XM2701 is the right cheaper answer.

Is the Brother XM2701 or the GX37 better?

They are effectively the same machine. The GX37 has ten more built-in stitches, all decorative. The threader, drop-in bobbin, one-step buttonhole, presser feet and weight are identical, so buy whichever is cheaper on the day.

Is the Brother XR9550 worth it over the CS7000X?

Only if you specifically want the larger display and the bigger decorative stitch library. The XR9550 drops the CS7000X's speed-control slider, which is the more useful feature for a beginner, and both machines include the wide table.

Are Brother sewing machines good quality?

They are good value rather than heirloom quality. Brother puts automatic threaders and drop-in bobbins on cheap models, which is genuinely useful, and accepts a lightweight plastic body to do it. That body is the limit: fine for cotton, garments and quilting, poor for regular heavy fabric.

Can a Brother beginner machine sew denim?

Occasionally, with a size 16 denim needle and a longer stitch. The crossing point where two folded jean hems meet is four layers plus topstitch thread, and a light plastic machine will shift on the table there. If denim is a weekly job, buy a metal-framed machine instead.
